WE HELP MEET THE NEEDS OF THE SICK AND THE
ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED!

The Cheyenne Day of Giving is not an event created on a whim! Its purpose is to direct goods straight to the people helped by the agencies and charities we support – those which help the sick and the economically disadvantaged. By doing so, we can make a real difference in the lives of those who struggle, not only in this area, but, with bone marrow donor registration, organ/tissue donor registration, and leftover prescription medication donation, and used prescription eyeglass donation, in far-reaching areas of the world as well.

The needs in our area are tremendous, and they are growing at an alarming rate! We hope people in the Cheyenne area will come together on Friday, May 7, 2010, and help alleviate as much of the suffering as possible.

Just look at these statistics! They demonstrate the great need for your help!

- Donate non-perishable food and personal care items

  • Cheyenne Interfaith Hospitality Network served 41 homeless individuals for a total of 4753 meals and 2099 bed nights in host congregations in 2009.

  • Comea House served 35,146 meals and provided 17,573 bed nights last year.

  • Needs gave away enough food for 383,220 meals in 2009. They served 25,548 clients, who are allowed to come once a month for food.

  • Safehouse Services sheltered 191 individuals for 4034 bed nights in 2009 and assisted 579 people with 3233 services, including food boxes and transportation. They also provided help to women and children setting up new apartments in a safe environment.

  • Salvation Army in 2010 is serving lunch to 75-85 people each day, usually including 4 to 5 toddlers. They are also giving away more and more food boxes as the economy continues to struggle.

  • Wyoming Coalition for the Homeless served 1,580 people in 2009 and is on track to serve more this year.

- Donate blood

  • United Blood Services needs 500 units of blood and blood products each week to serve the 18 hospitals in the area.
  • Only one in 20 people regularly give blood, but there is no substitute for blood.
  • Each year, more than 4 million Americans depend on blood transfusions for their very lives – and we can help fill that need!
- Donate leftover prescription medications, including inhalers and drug patches
  • Millions of people in the U.S. cannot afford their prescription drugs. Worldwide, far more are suffering
  • Wyoming has a Medication Donation law which allows residents to donate leftover medicines.
  • The Laramie County Centralized Pharmacy sorts through the medicines, keeps the ones which can be used here and sends others that can be used overseas to missionaries in other countries.
  • Patients who go to the Cheyenne Community Clinic (free clinic) can receive these medications.
  • Doctors in the community can also get these free medications for their patients who meet low income guidelines.

- Register as a bone marrow donor

  • Over 6,000 patients a year die because they haven’t found a bone marrow donor match
  • Bone marrow donation is the only hope of a cure for many patients with blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, and other immune system disorders.
  • Most patients find a match from a donor of the same heritage, so it is important for healthy people of all backgrounds and between 18 and 60 years old to register.

- Register as an organ/tissue donor

  • More than 1,700 people in our own area are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant.
  • Almost every religion supports donating organs and tissues after death
